None of this needs a dedicated planner to execute. It just needs someone (you, a willing bridesmaid, or your wedding hub) tracking it consistently from the moment your venue is booked.

Every country handles foreign marriages differently, and the paperwork timeline is usually the single biggest constraint on how soon you can legally marry abroad, often more restrictive than any venue availability. Here's what tends to matter most across the destinations we work with.

Choosing your town

Ravello sits highest and quietest, favoured for its gardens and relative distance from the coast road's summer traffic. Positano is more dramatic and more crowded, beautiful in photos, harder logistically for large guest groups. Amalfi town itself offers the most hotel infrastructure within walking distance of venues.

Permits and access

Many of the coast's most iconic terraces, Villa Cimbrone among them, require permits booked well in advance, particularly for larger guest counts or extended access outside standard visiting hours. Your venue coordinator typically handles this, but timelines can run several months, so confirm early rather than assuming it's a formality.

The transport reality

The coast road is narrow, scenic, and slow in peak season, factor generous transfer times into every part of your schedule, particularly between Naples airport and your venue (budget 90 minutes to 2 hours depending on traffic and town). Boat transfers between towns are often faster than road transfers in July and August.

Best season to marry here

May, June and September offer the coast's best weather without August's peak crowds and heat. July and August are stunning in photos but genuinely difficult for guest comfort and transport, worth weighing against the appeal of a classic Amalfi summer wedding.

• Book your ceremony terrace and permits 12+ months out for peak season dates.
• Choose accommodation within walking distance of your ceremony venue where possible, coast-road transfers eat into your day faster than you'd expect.
• Build a rain and wind contingency into your ceremony plan; exposed clifftop terraces are magnificent but weather-dependent.

Done well, an Amalfi Coast wedding delivers a kind of cinematic drama that's genuinely hard to find elsewhere. It just asks for a little more logistical patience than a flatter, less spectacular setting would.

But July is also peak heat, peak tourist season, and the month every other couple has the same idea, which means venue prices, guest travel costs and competition for the best suppliers all peak simultaneously. September is the quieter, smarter alternative, and it isn't the compromise people assume.

Contrary to popular belief, Provence's lavender season doesn't end abruptly at the end of July. Later-flowering varieties, particularly around the Valensole plateau, keep fields purple into early September in most years, you'll get the photo without the July crowds trampling the same rows.

July highs regularly reach the mid-30s°C in inland Provence, genuinely uncomfortable for guests in formal wear at an outdoor ceremony. September typically sits 5–8 degrees cooler, with warm days and comfortable evenings that don't require an ice sculpture budget just to keep guests cool.

Availability and cost

Venues that are fully booked a year out for July dates often still have September availability even six to eight months out, and vendor rates, particularly for photographers and florists, tend to soften once peak season passes. Flights and accommodation for your guests follow the same pattern.

What you trade off

Days are shorter by September, so your golden-hour ceremony slot moves earlier, worth checking against your planned schedule. Some seasonal producers (certain lavender-adjacent farm venues) also wind down their public access after the harvest, so confirm your specific venue's calendar rather than assuming.

If the picture in your head is lavender fields without the crowds, September is usually the better version of the July fantasy, not a compromise on it.

Destination weddings have a reputation for being the expensive option, but that's often a function of choosing peak-season Santorini rather than the format itself. A smaller guest list, a shoulder-season date, and a country with a favourable cost base can make an abroad wedding meaningfully cheaper than the same wedding at home.

Cyprus has been one of Europe's most popular destination wedding islands for decades, and for good reason: reliable sunshine from April through October, easy flight access from across Europe, English widely spoken, and a genuinely wide range of settings, clifftop resorts, mountain villages, beach chapels, working vineyards, all within a couple of hours' drive of each other. This is where we have real, personal experience, and this guide covers what we think actually matters: the legal process, how to choose where on the island to marry, and the venues we'd genuinely point you toward.

Legal requirements, what you actually need

Cyprus recognises both civil and religious ceremonies (Orthodox, Catholic and Anglican among them), and a marriage held there is legally valid back home for most nationalities without any further paperwork. The process is well-established, Cyprus has been handling foreign weddings for a very long time, but it is a real legal process, not a formality, so it's worth taking seriously and starting early.

Based on current guidance, couples typically need:

• Valid passports, with at least a few months' validity remaining beyond your travel dates.
• Full birth certificates (the long-form version showing parents' names, not the short certificate).
• A single status declaration, sometimes called an affidavit or statutory declaration, confirming you're free to marry. This needs to be signed by a solicitor or notary public and carry an apostille stamp. It's typically only valid for around 12 weeks, so timing matters.
• A decree absolute (with apostille) if either of you has been divorced, or a death certificate and previous marriage certificate if widowed.
• Two witnesses at the ceremony itself, your venue or planner can usually provide these if your guests can't.

The exact document your home country requires to confirm you're free to marry varies by nationality. It might be called a Certificate of No Impediment, a Freedom to Marry Certificate, or a Single Status Affidavit, issued by your foreign affairs department, embassy or a solicitor. Whatever it's called where you're from, it's usually only valid for a matter of months, so it's worth checking the exact name, issuing body and processing time for your own nationality early.

Your marriage application has to be made in person, after you arrive in Cyprus, to the Marriage Officer at the Municipality covering your venue's area. This isn't something that can be done remotely in advance. A standard marriage licence has a waiting period of around 15 days from when notice is given; an urgent licence is available for an additional fee if you're working with a shorter runway. Most couples plan to be in Cyprus at least a few working days before the ceremony to get this done comfortably.

Requirements can vary by nationality and do change from time to time. This is a solid starting point, but confirm current specifics with your own embassy or consulate and your venue's wedding coordinator before you finalise anything.

Choosing where in Cyprus

Cyprus is a small island, but the character shifts a lot between regions, worth thinking about before you fall in love with a specific venue.

Paphos

The southwest coast, and probably the island's most established wedding region, UNESCO World Heritage archaeological sites, a working harbour, and the largest concentration of high-end resort venues. Well served by direct flights into Paphos International Airport.

Limassol

Cyprus's second city, with a longer stretch of coastline and some of the island's most polished five-star resorts. More cosmopolitan than Paphos, with strong hotel and restaurant infrastructure for guests staying on for a few extra days.

Protaras & Ayia Napa

The east coast, dramatic clifftop scenery around Cape Greco, and calmer, more turquoise water than the south coast. A bit further from the main airports but worth it for couples who want genuinely striking coastal drama.

The Troodos Mountains

Inland and up in altitude, noticeably cooler in high summer, with stone villages, vineyards and monasteries rather than beach resorts. The right choice for couples who want Cyprus's other side: mountain views and traditional architecture instead of coastline.

May, June and September offer the most comfortable combination of reliable sunshine and manageable heat for guests in formal wear. July and August are genuinely hot, regularly into the mid-30s°C, stunning in photos but worth weighing against guest comfort, especially for an afternoon ceremony. Cyprus's wedding season generally runs March through November; winter months are quieter and cooler, but many resorts still operate and can offer better availability and rates.

Getting there

Cyprus has two international airports, Larnaca and Paphos, both well connected to the rest of Europe by direct and low-cost carrier routes, particularly through the spring and summer wedding season. Larnaca is the larger of the two, with the broader range of routes and airlines; Paphos is smaller but sits closer to the southwest coast resorts. Which one makes sense for your guests depends on where your venue is, Paphos International suits the southwest coast, while Larnaca is the better link for Limassol, Ayia Napa and Protaras. Worth checking direct routes from your guests' home airports early, since availability and frequency both improve the further ahead you book.

The couple met three and a half years earlier through mutual friends, and Cyprus was where they spent their first holiday together. After getting engaged in Marrakech, they knew straight away where they wanted to marry. "It's such a stunning spot for a wedding," Jade said at the time, "we couldn't wait to show it to all our guests." Seventy-five family and friends flew out to join them.

The style

Their day leaned rustic and romantic, with a touch of Grecian influence running through the bridesmaids' hair and floor-length dresses. The palette stayed soft throughout, blush, ivory and grey, with oversized rustic lanterns, lilac orchids, white hydrangeas and peach roses carried from the ceremony through to the reception.
